The Illumine collection
There is an enormous problem in our planet caused by ignorance and
lack of awareness. We live in a consumer society where products are
discarded when no longer useful, causing pollution and environmental
strain. The art of disassembling these unwanted objects and re-using
these parts is not just about recycling and re-forming. There is a
remarkable art behind the transformation and often unconventional
re-interpretation of matter.
Every part of these scrap metal sculptures has a story to tell. From
F- 18 and Boeing airplanes, to computer hard drives, cars, bicycle
parts, old vintage cameras and watches.
To tell you that I had a plan when coming across all these parts,
would be inaccurate. Each part I find evokes a feeling of where it
should go or what it should be part of in connection with another
part. In this way, I begin to envision a finished form. It is as if
every part has a pre-ordained place in the sculpture. When the
sculpture is finished so is the past life and function of this part
and a new life begins in its cyclic existence. This is a great
satisfaction for me to experience, as I feel like humans have a
responsibility towards their environment and also the intelligence to
influence it.
And finally if you ask me why make the sculptures into lights…other
than having a functional and practical purpose, light represents
truth. It reveals.
